Isaac Asimov (1920–1992)
was an American writer and professor of biochemistry, recognized as one of the “Big Three” science fiction authors of the 20th century. In 2026, he is increasingly cited as the “prophet of the AI age” due to his foundational work on robot ethics.
Born in Russia, his family emigrated to Brooklyn when he was three. He taught himself to read at age five and spent his youth working in his family’s candy stores, where he discovered science fiction pulp magazines.
Asimov wrote or edited more than 500 books. His works cover nine of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System, ranging from science and history to Shakespeare and the Bible.
